“And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.”- Romans 5:5

Paul, in speaking to the Romans on faith, mentioned a key point which is in fact, a great gift, blessing, and enablement from God.

God’s love being poured in our hearts by the Holy Spirit means that if we are led by His Spirit, we are all capable of loving anyone and everyone; be they male or female, straight or gay, shrewd or honest, young or old, white, brown or black. We are capable of loving anyone who has hurt us, belittled us, plotted evil against us. Because of God’s Spirit in us, we can love even when we are not loved back in return; we can love unconditionally, we can love those whose standards contradict ours, our beliefs, the way of Christ. We can love the saved and the unsaved. As Christians, we understand that the love in us, the love we are called to have for others(and even ourselves), the love we express does not spring from our thoughts or emotions. The love we are called to express to everyone is the love of God that has been shed (shared, spread) abroad in our hearts, freely. When we understand this, it is easy for us to operate asides from our emotion. It is easy for us to love without expecting anything in return. It is easy to love, truly and unconditionally.

God has called us to love and not by our own ability. He has given us a part of Himself so that indeed, His love, would be the core of our being even as it is His.

Much strife, anger, disunity, wars, malice, hatred, unforgiveness, gossip, hurt, exists in our lives, our families, our churches because we have not embraced the love of God. We are letting our emotions have the better part of us.

Where there is no love, strife and contempt (which is the feeling that a person or a thing is worthless or beneath consideration) breeds. In the presence of these, there can be no unity, no progress. When disunity exists amongst a people, there is no hedge around them. They can suffer a great deal of loss, affliction because there is no bond. They are, like scattered broomsticks, more prone to attack and destruction. There is great freedom in knowing that we don’t have to struggle to love anyone despite who they are for “love covers (not permits, not promotes) a multitude of sins” (italicised words are mine, not from scripture) 1Pet. 4:8

Our lives, our families, the fabric of our society is experiencing turmoil and much decay because somewhere along the line, we chose selfishness instead of love; unforgiveness instead, contempt and every other way “what is not love” chooses to manifest through us.

The disunity we see is because we have not chosen to let God’s unconditional love flourish through us.

Today, God is letting you know, that there has always been the best way: love; and that we don’t have to learn how to love, we just have to let His Spirit lead us to love. It has been shed abroad (abundantly, generously, sufficiently)in our hearts by the Holy Spirit.

Let also remember the blessing attached to unity as found in Psalm 133:1-3.

May the Grace of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Love of God and the sweet fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you now and forever. Amen.
